Once you order live crickets, you want to keep them alive to provide your pet reptile with fresh food when needed. However, many cricket owners realize the crickets are dying before they can use them all, especially when they buy them in bulks. To correct this problem and keep your crickets alive, you must identify what you are doing wrong.

First, The type of container you are keeping the crickets in should have the proper ventilation. Crickets need a large enclosure with plenty of air holes, so poke as many holes as possible into the plastic lid or cardboard, to get enough air. Also, your crickets should have enough space in the container for them to be comfortable. Get the right size container and plenty of egg cartons because if it is too small, the crickets will injure each other.

Second. Regular water dishes are not an option for these tiny creatures because they are susceptible to drowning. A better choice is a fresh fruit as the water source such as oranges or apples. On the other hand, if you still want to use a water dish, it should be small and filled about 1/4 inch of water. A sponge also is a good idea for them to get the water from there and climb outside the dish when needed.

Third. The way you are maintaining the enclosure must be clean at all times. If one cricket dies, remove the carcass immediately. Also, uneaten food portions must be removed before they go bad and keep the water always fresh too. Moreover, when cleaning the tank stay away from harsh chemicals!

Fourth. Do you regulate the inside temperature of the cricket space? Does the heating lamp have the proper wattage? Crickets habitat has to be 75 – 90 degrees Fahrenheit to stay alive, and anything colder than 75°F will cause death. The shorter the lifespan of crickets related to temperature, so be careful.

Crickets have a lifespan of about 8-10 weeks.
Buy young crickets so that they don’t die before you feed your pet.
If the death rate seems unusual even though you follow these suggestions, a virus could be a problem.
